Paprika Measurement Converter
Use the tool below to convert paprika from the measurements in your recipe to the measurements that you need.
Paprika is red pepper that has been dried and ground to a powder, and it gives goulash, chorizo and a dry rub their colour. Most recipes ask for a teaspoon or a tablespoon rather than a cup, and one tablespoon (15 ml) comes in at about 7 grams or a quarter of an ounce. A whole metric cup (250 ml) weighs 115 grams or 4.06 ounces, and sweet, smoked and hot paprika all weigh the same, so one conversion works for whichever jar you have open.
Sweet, smoked and hot paprika differ in flavour and heat, not in weight: sweet is mild and fruity, smoked (pimentón) is dried over oak, and hot carries a chilli burn. Weighing it lets you scale up a rub or a stew, and keeps the balance the same when you swap one type for another.

Achiote powder is denser at 130 g per cup and gives Yucatecan dishes their brick-red colour. You can use paprika if achiote is not on hand, though it tastes sweeter and less earthy. See our Achiote Powder converter.
Turmeric powder is denser at 150 g per cup and gives your dish a yellow colour. Cooks often mix paprika and turmeric half and half to replace achiote, so the two converters get used together. See our Turmeric Powder converter.
Paprika comes from red peppers that have been dried and ground to a powder. Switch to the bell pepper converter when a recipe wants fresh capsicum by the cup or by the item. See our Bell Pepper converter.

In my kitchen
Paprika is used in all sorts in my kitchen. It goes into rubs and marinades, into curries for flavour and colour, and into a chilli for a smoky note. My easy chickpea curry is probably the main time I use it myself, though more experienced cooks in the house have more diverse uses. The trigger for adding it here was a recent Mexican pulled pork dish where we had to find a substitute for achiote powder, and paprika mixed with turmeric gave us what we needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are paprika and sweet paprika the same thing?
- Yes. Sweet paprika is another name for paprika, so they are the same ingredient and measure identically. A teaspoon of paprika weighs 2.3 grams under either name, and every conversion on this page holds whichever name your recipe uses. Recipes swap the two freely, so you can follow either without changing quantities or weighing any differently.
- Do sweet, smoked and hot paprika weigh the same?
- Yes, near enough. All three are ground dried Capsicum annuum, so a metric cup of sweet, smoked or hot paprika weighs about 115 grams, and a teaspoon about 2.3 grams. Grind and freshness move the number more than the type does: a coarse grind traps more air, and a jar that has been open a while packs down. For a spice rub or a large batch, weigh it rather than measuring by the spoon.
- How much is a pinch of paprika?
- A pinch of paprika is about 0.14 grams, 0.01 ounces, or 0.06 teaspoons, taking a pinch as one sixteenth of a teaspoon (about 0.3 ml). A pinch is not a standard measure and varies between cooks, with some using closer to 1/8 teaspoon. For seasoning it is to taste, but weigh small amounts when a bake has to rise or set.
- What is 100g of paprika in ounces?
- 100 grams of paprika is 3.53 ounces. This is the same for any ingredient, since grams and ounces are both weight units and do not change with what you are weighing. 200 grams is 7.06 ounces and 50 grams is 1.77 ounces. Use the weight converter to switch between grams, ounces, pounds, and kilograms for any amount. Open the weight converter
- How much does a teaspoon of paprika weigh?
- 1 teaspoon of paprika in grams is 2.3 grams. The ratio is fixed, so 2 teaspoons is 4.6 grams and half a teaspoon is 1.15 grams. Ingredients like paprika are usually measured by the spoon, so this is the amount most recipes call for. See the full teaspoon to grams chart for paprika for more.
