Rolled Oats Measurement Converter
Use the tool below to convert rolled oats from the measurements in your recipe to the measurements that you need.
Rolled oats are whole oat groats that have been steamed and flattened into flakes (quicker to prepare than steel-cut oats, which are coarsely chopped and take 20–30 minutes to cook) and chewier in texture than quick oats (which are rolled thinner for a 1–2 minute cook time). One metric cup (250 ml) of rolled oats weighs approximately 90 grams or 3.17 ounces. They are widely used in porridge, granola, baked goods such as oat cookies and crumbles, and as a breadcrumb substitute.
Oats are often sold by weight but measured by volume in baking recipes, so getting the conversion right prevents dense or dry results. Measuring by weight is especially important as oats compress easily, making cup measures inconsistent.

In my kitchen
Oats are the basis of my breakfast almost every day during the week: rolled oat porridge with chia seeds, and occasionally mashed banana. The other main use is oat-based cookies for our kids' school lunch snack, usually mixed with chocolate chips and craisins. Rolled oats go into a crumble topping now and then, though my wife prefers the non-oat topping with only flour, butter and sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are rolled oats and oatmeal the same thing?
- Yes. Oatmeal is another name for rolled oats, so they are the same ingredient and measure identically. A cup of rolled oats weighs 90 grams under either name, and every conversion on this page holds whichever name your recipe uses. Recipes swap the two freely, so you can follow either without changing quantities or weighing any differently.
- What is 0.25 cups of rolled oats in tablespoons?
- 0.25 cups of rolled oats is 4.17 tablespoons. This is the same for any ingredient, since cups and tablespoons are both volume units and do not depend on what you are measuring. One cup is about 16.67 tablespoons, so 0.5 cups is 8.33 tablespoons. Use the volume converter to switch between cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, and millilitres for any amount. Open the volume converter
- How much does a cup of rolled oats weigh?
- 1 cup of rolled oats in grams is 90 grams. The ratio is fixed, so 2 cups is 180 grams and half a cup is 45 grams. Weighing rolled oats by the cup is the most common way to measure it for baking. See the full cup to grams chart for rolled oats, or use the converter on this page for any other amount. 1 cup rolled oats in grams

Oat Flour
Oat flour is rolled oats milled to a fine powder, close in weight (100 g vs 90 g per cup). Blend rolled oats to make your own oat flour, or weigh the oats when a recipe gives one form but you have the other. See our Oat Flour converter.
